We have all seen those dreamy Pinterest bathrooms: a steam shower clad in marble, softly illuminated by a glowing brass wall sconce. It looks like a spa sanctuary. But as you plan your own renovation, a nagging question pops up: Can you put a wall sconce in a shower safely?

The short answer is yes, but with a massive asterisk.
Lighting the inside of a shower is not just a design choice; it is a matter of strict electrical safety. Electricity and water are a dangerous combination, and getting it wrong violates building codes (and risks your safety).
At Houlte, we believe high design shouldn't come with high risk. In this guide, we’ll break down the NEC codes, explain the crucial difference between "Wet" and "Damp" ratings, and show you exactly how to light your bathroom sanctuary safely.
The "Shower Zone": Understanding NEC Code 410.10
According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), specifically section 410.10(D), the area inside your shower is a restricted zone. This zone is defined as the space within the outside dimensions of your tub or shower stall, extending up to 8 feet (2.5 meters) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower threshold.
If you want to install a light fixture inside this box, it must meet specific criteria:
- Subject to Shower Spray: If the light fixture is placed where it might get hit by water spray (which is almost guaranteed for a wall sconce), it MUST be marked "Suitable for Wet Locations."
- Not Subject to Spray: If the fixture is high up (above 8 feet) or in a dry corner where spray cannot reach it, it can be marked "Suitable for Damp Locations."
The Verdict: Because wall sconces are typically mounted at eye level (around 60-66 inches from the floor), they are well within the splash zone. Therefore, any wall sconce installed inside a shower must be Wet Rated.
Wet Rated vs. Damp Rated: What’s the Difference?
This is the most common mistake homeowners make. A "bathroom light" is not necessarily a "shower light."
- Wet Rated (Required for Showers): These fixtures are sealed with special gaskets and waterproofing to withstand direct contact with water, rain, and heavy splashing. You can spray them with a hose, and they will be fine.
- Damp Rated (Perfect for Vanities): These fixtures are designed to handle moist air and humidity (like the steam from a hot shower), but they cannot handle direct water contact.
Houlte Design Tip: Most decorative designer sconces are Damp Rated. They are perfect for flanking your vanity mirror or hanging on the wall opposite the tub, but they should NOT be placed inside the glass shower enclosure.
Where to Place Sconces in the Bathroom (Safely)
If you love the look of Houlte sconces, the best place for them is usually just outside the shower zone. This gives you that spa-like ambiance without the strict "Wet Rated" limitations.

- The Vanity Flank Skip the harsh overhead bar light. Place two Houlte Bathroom Sconces on either side of your mirror. This provides the most flattering, shadow-free light for makeup and shaving.
- Safety Check: This is a "Damp Location," so standard Houlte bathroom fixtures are perfect here.
2. The Tub Side If you have a freestanding bathtub, placing a wall sconce on the wall behind or beside the tub (but not directly over it if the ceiling is low) adds incredible luxury.
- Safety Check: As long as the sconce is outside the 3-foot horizontal reach of the tub or higher than 8 feet, standard Damp Rated fixtures often comply. However, always consult your electrician to confirm local codes.
3. The Water Closet Don't neglect the separate toilet room. A small, chic sconce here adds character to an otherwise boring space.
How to Light the Shower If You Can't Use a Sconce
If you can't find a Wet Rated sconce that matches your style, don't force it. Instead, layer your lighting:
- Recessed Wet-Rated Can Light: Install a waterproof recessed light in the ceiling of the shower for safety and function.
- Ambient Sconces Outside: Use beautiful Houlte sconces on the walls outside the glass door. The glass will allow the warm glow to filter into the shower, giving you that mood lighting without the safety risk.
